Oregonians: your trees are mere twigs!
Last weekend I enjoyed a nice trip to Cannon Beach with my husband. On the way there we passed the "Largest Sitka Spruce Tree in the United States" - driving along with my Alaska born and raised husband, I mentioned in passing this landmark that I had visited numerous times as a kid, my dad and mom stopped there so we could see a big tree. When all we really wanted to do to is get to the beach.
So, I mention this to Mr. Alaska-man and he said in a highly skeptical tone, "Oh really...the largest Sitka Spruce?? Here, in Oregon?" So, he insisted we stop and take a look. He is certain that the largest Sitka Spruce tree is in Alaska- NATURALLY- how possibly could it reside in such a puny state as Oregon?!
Even upon inspection of the now ALLEGED largest Sitka Spruce, he said "hmm...they must only mean the largest Sitka Spruce in the lower 48"
For those of you unfamiliar with Alaskans, the "lower 48" refers to us in the contiguous United States, we weenies that live among small trees, and milder climes....
We did document our stay, a very nice man took our picture. I must admit we are quite a pair, me- hair in the pony tail, a scruffy flannel shirt so big I used wear it when I was 9 months pregnant, and ugly out of style jeans. My husband cut a smarter figure as he was sporting a Pirate themed shirt. In addition to shameless Alaska boosterism, he has a fascination with pirates. I have to admit I kind of think his shirt was cool. It has a pirate flag and below it, says "We prefer to be called Buccaneer-Americans."
We did take a hike around Ecola State Park- highly recommend it....go from the viewpoint to Indian Beach. Also, enjoy an excellent dinner at Morris' Fireside restuarant and brunch at the Lazy Susan Cafe.
Oh, and also stop on your way to view the "alleged largest Sitka Spruce in the United States"

Yeah, what b-bop said.
That Sitka is pretty damn big (although it's twiggy compared to the redwoods in N. California). I wouldn't be surprised if it was given its designation without regard to what might be in Alaska, though. Although here's a thought: Do they have Sitka spruces in Alaska? Maybe not. I think Sitkas only grow in a very limited region.
Love the clam chowder at Morris's Fireside.
